Cases Tried in Federal Court

Being tried in federal court is trickier than one might imagine.  They only try certain types of cases and for your case to be heard in a Federal Court, you must have the correct type of case, otherwise it will not be under Federal jurisdiction.  To be tried in Federal court you must;
  • Commit a crime on a ship at sea,
  • Be involved in a State vs. State lawsuit,
  • Break a law that Congress creates,
  • Violate the US Constitution,
  • Violate a US treaty,
  • Or be suing someone from a different state.
